Jada Pinkett Smith disclosed in a new interview that she and her husband Will Smith had been separated since 2016.
Though the stars had been living completely separate lives for seven years,
she admitted to NBC that they were not ready to publicly reveal the news.
They were "exhausted with trying" by the time they parted, she added. The couple still lives apart but do not intend to divorce.
Pinkett Smith, 52, told NBC that she had promised herself that she and Smith, 55, would never divorce and that she has not been able to break that pledge.
According to Jada Pinkett Smith, "I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be,"
Smith stormed the stage at the Oscars last year and smacked host Chris Rock, telling him to "keep my wife's name out of your [expletive] mouth."
When Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith's baldness, the incident occurred. The actor suffers from alopecia, a hair loss illness.
Pinkett Smith told People in a separate interview that she initially mistook it for a planned hoax.
